Light up your living room – and impress!
Since first impressions are lasting impressions, you ought to take particular care to impress through your drawing room. This is the room where your guests enter and form their first impressions. It should have a homely, soothing, inviting ambience and a sophisticated look. Lighting helps more than what many realize.
Selection of lights that can add ambience to your persona in the living/ drawing room is no easy task. To start with, lighting stores have bright lights, which make it difficult to estimate the amount of light shed from the new lamp that looked so good at the store.
In the ready built house that you have, adequate number of light fixtures would be installed such that you need not use all lights to illuminate up the room. These days it is very trendy to use a pot light, which allows targeting light to particular areas of your room. Embedded fixtures are also in vogue as are hanging fixtures. Take particular care if tall people reside – avoid their awkward collusion with hanging light fixtures! Low roofed rooms and kitchen should not have hanging fixtures. However if you are sold to the idea of using hanging lights, you need to be careful with respect to their position. Don’t place them in the main walkways – every house intrinsically have them – of your house; try hanging them safely in the corners.
Preference for lamps should go with the numbers required to proportionately light up a room. Hence a set of four could be required to illuminate a medium sized room, two stand-up floor models and two small table lamps. Thickness of the shade is also important; the amount of light penetrating out of shades is what actually illuminates. A shade with thin fabric or a light colored one would allow best light outputs.
A dark room will help you to choose the position of lights so plan the exercise accordingly. Areas where people will read, write, or play require maximum light. Since television should not be watched in dark room, you need to ensure proper illumination in that room. Make sure light from the fixtures overlap in the main areas.
In order to heighten lights effects, use dimming switches. These may be installed on your overhead lights and floor lamps. They give you the power to control how bright you want your room to be. Regulating light in each part of the room is in your control with a series of dimmer switches. Instructions are given on how to install dimmers. Their installation is done in the same way as that for ordinary light switches.
To light up your rooms most appropriately, start with lighting the room with uniform light so that your eyes don’t notice any obstruction as they move from one object to another. Once this is obtained, highlight the curios and other artifacts in the room.
How much care you take to decorate your living room is purely a matter of taste. You should apply your imagination to achieve great results. Creating synergy with each of the artifacts, furniture, lights and space can give a very soothing effect to your living room. Its impact can be wonderful on you as well as your guests.
