Holiday Decorations

Everybody looks forward to the holiday season, whether it is Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or New Year's Eve. People from all parts of the world like to enjoy such holidays in the midst of their friends and family. Such occasions merit proper celebrations and decorations. Holiday decorations are a part of these activities and they enable the people to bring forth their creative talents.

Holiday decorations in the holiday season add that extra sparkle to the celebrations that are characterized by generosity, warmth, songs and family traditions. Nowadays, there are many options of holiday decorations to choose from. The best greenery for indoor holiday decorations is pines, cedars and firs. However, for outdoor decorations both hemlock and spruces are ideal for exterior wreaths. These could lose their needles in less than a week if they are brought inside a warm building. Decorative greenery can also be produced with boxwood, yews and holly.

Fruits, nuts and berries can be used to decorate these wreaths or swags. Acorns, gourds, rose hips, bittersweet and cones of most evergreens would also serve the purpose. For holiday decorations fresh fruits like small apples, oranges, limes, lemons and kumquats can be used for making "Della Robbia" types of wreaths.

The mistletoe kissing tradition started when Frigga, one of the gods in the Norse myths gave a charm of mistletoe to her son Balder to guard him from the elements. But mistletoe had the power to harm him as it could not grow in water or earth or fire or air. It could only grow on trees and when Balder was struck down by the arrows of some other god, his mother shed tears of white berries and brought back her son’s life and promised that she would kiss anyone resting beneath the plant. This is how the mistletoe kissing tradition started.
